CCSD reports sharp rise in gifted identification and state funding code

Kate Morris, CCSD’s district gifted instructional coach, updated the board on growth in the district’s gifted, talented and creative program and changes to state funding.
Morris said this school year marked the first time New Mexico assigned a gifted budget code (4050) and that the district received state aid reported as $340,795 for identified gifted students in the current year. She said the district increased the number of identified students by 47% over the previous year and projected a $724,000 gifted budget for 2026–27 tied to eightieth-day counts reported to the New Mexico PED.
Morris described strong satisfaction rates from families and students: “Overall student satisfaction with the gifted education experience, currently this year is at 98.6 percent,” she told the board. Services include weekly gifted teachers on each campus, gifted seminars and partnerships with Arizona State University and Purdue University.
Board members asked for a breakdown of which grades and schools have the largest gifted populations. Morris said gifted-identified students are present at all 15 district schools, that the district had focused screening on grades 5–9 this year and offered to provide a detailed, school-level and grade-level report to the board by email or at a future meeting.
Next steps: staff will provide requested grade- and school-level identification data and continue testing and professional development tied to the local gifted education plan.
