Board honors student champions and reviews summer meal program outcomes

The board celebrated the Allegany High School baseball state champions and several SkillsUSA/FBLA state winners; members also received an update on the Frostburg Summer Lunchbox program, which served 6,823 bagged lunches and distributed 1,575 grocery bags over eight weeks.
At the start of the Aug. 12 meeting the Allegany County Board of Education recognized the Allegany High School baseball team as state champions. Tracy Leonard introduced the team and head coach John Irons described the players, assistant coaches and the program’s culture that led to a 6–2 victory at Bowie Baysox Stadium over St. Michael's on May 24. Principal Scott Bauer and student team members were acknowledged and received applause from the board.
The board also recognized career-technical student successes: Bethany Scott (graphic design) qualified for nationals; students in P-TECH and networking infrastructure placed in state competitions and will advance to national contests. Instructors Michael Shockey and Tyler Couric were named during the recognitions.
Later in the meeting, Missus Lepley presented an update on the Frostburg Summer Lunchbox program (coordinated by volunteer Jennifer Georgeson and program coordinator Sherry Ann Mangus). The program, relaunched with County United Way support and community partners, served 6,823 bagged lunches during an eight-week period (Monday–Thursday) and provided 1,575 supplemental grocery bags on Fridays. Lepley credited 28 cafeteria staff and over 150 volunteers plus local partners such as Frostburg State University, area banks and local churches for supporting distribution to Western Port and Mount Savage.
The recognitions and program update were presented as part of routine reports; no formal board action was recorded on these items.
