District reports summer credit recovery gains; 129 high-school credits regained

Trina Simpson, who oversees the high-school portion of summer programs, told the Allegany County Board of Education that the district recovered 129 high-school credits during the summer via an in-person, attendance-mandated 20-day credit-recovery program. She said an additional 110 elective or advancement credits were earned by students who took summer classes to accelerate their course of study.
Simpson highlighted a Fort Hill pilot program that used school-day credit recovery to regain 78 credits, helping raise the district’s summer totals closer to the historic average of about 200 credits. "If we can be the best team we can be in May, then we give ourselves a shot," she said in a comment about persistence; on the instructional slides she reported that 99.23% of summer students earned a C or higher.
The presentation noted supports for students with IEPs and 504 plans (13 credits recovered for students with IEPs and eight with 504 plans) and emphasized that high-school credit recovery is in-person to ensure sufficient instructional time. Simpson said roughly half of participants qualified for a reduced (half-price) fee for summer credit recovery based on economic disadvantage.
Board members asked whether many students qualified for reduced fees; Simpson replied it is "about half" based on registration data. She framed the program as more than a "check the box" credit—work is required to meet mastery and ensure students are prepared for subsequent courses, especially in math.
