Brea Olinda board swears in members, names Carrie Flanders president

The Brea Olinda Unified School District board on Dec. 16 administered oaths of office to newly seated and returning trustees and reorganized its leadership for 2025. Trustees Joseph Covey, Dina Miller and Paul Ruiz were sworn in before the board voted unanimously to elect Trustee Carrie Flanders as board president and Trustee Chris Becerra as vice president.
The reorganization began after the board confirmed a quorum. Vice President Carrie Flanders administered the oath to newly seated members and returning trustees, who introduced family and supporters. The board then accepted nominations and, after a voice vote, approved Flanders as president and Becerra as vice president by unanimous votes.
The board also appointed Superintendent Brenda Leon as the board's secretary for 2025 and adopted the 2025 board meeting calendar, moving regular public meetings from 6:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and scheduling closed sessions at 4:00 p.m. Trustees said the earlier start times will help accommodate busy schedules and ongoing bond-related work.
Board members held a brief reception after the oath and used the reorganizational agenda to confirm committee and regional assignments, including North Orange County ROP and CSBA delegate roles. Several trustees urged continued outreach and public messaging as the board begins work on bond project prioritization and other district initiatives.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for Jan. 23, 2025.
