Palmdale planning and building divisions report heavy 2025 workload, launch public project map

Brenda Magana, planning manager, told the City Council the planning division handled a high volume of work in 2025 and unveiled an interactive public map of city projects. The division processed roughly 5–77 planning applications, fielded over 9,000 phone calls, handled more than 2,000 counter visits and logged about 11,000 email inquiries, Magana said, and staff approved nearly 200,000 square feet of commercial development and more than 3.5 million square feet of industrial development.
City officials said the new interactive map allows residents to zoom to projects, view the assigned planner and see contact information. “When you zoom in, you can see who the builder is, who the planner is that’s working on it, and you have direct contact information should you have any questions,” Magana said.
Council members pressed staff to clarify how many projects were completed in 2025 versus simply permitted. Building and Safety staff later told the council that 175 residential units were completed in 2025 and 185 permits were issued; staff said they would provide more detailed completion and occupancy figures. Councilmember questions also prompted staff to agree to prepare a housing-element history and a more detailed report on units completed and projected for 2026.
Why it matters: Palmdale faces state housing targets and council members said they want clearer data linking approvals and permits to completed housing units. The interactive map is intended to increase transparency, but council members and public commenters asked for more detail — for example, developer contact information on public‑notice signage and clearer project visuals.
