Miami Lakes' Senior Committee approved scheduling a free "Senior Spa Day" at the Roberto Alonso Community Center on Wednesday, Aug. 27, where beauty and cosmetology students will provide haircuts, manicures, mini facials and chair massages.
Speaker 4 told the committee the students will be on site from about 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and recommended limiting services to one per senior to maximize participation. "I am going to put out there first come, first serve," Speaker 4 said, and the committee agreed that a limit of about 25—30 seniors would be prudent for the first session.
Committee members discussed access and registration: the event will be promoted on the town website and will not open advance Eventbrite registration, to avoid early reservations that exclude seniors who do not register online. "I'm not gonna open that list ... until, like, 9AM, which is 30 minutes before the service," Speaker 4 said; the committee asked staff to include clear language that the event is first-come, first-served and to make the service available to the community on the posted day.
Organizers also discussed staffing limits and volunteer check-in procedures to avoid long waits or disappointment. The committee did not record an associated expense or motion to pay for services—students will provide the services as part of their training; the committee will provide space and logistical support.
The committee asked staff to finalize promotional language and confirm logistics (how many students, exact slot count) and to report back at the next meeting if changes are needed.
