Board approves revisions to high-school courses, expands peer-mentor eligibility and dual-enrollment credits

At its Jan. 27 meeting the Catalina Foothills Unified School District Governing Board approved revisions to high school courses and programs for the 2026–27 school year.
Cheryl Castro, the district’s Executive Director of Curriculum and Assessment, presented the proposed changes and said clarifications discussed at a prior meeting were highlighted in the board memo. Key changes include confirmation that academic recognition GPAs are weighted; a clarified set of thresholds for annual academic recognition (the board was shown that students must meet the required GPA in both semesters to qualify for silver or blue awards); and a reduction in the minimum GPA to serve as a peer classroom mentor from 2.5 to 2.0, coupled with a requirement for teacher permission and demonstrated content understanding and academic skills.
Castro also presented Career and Technical Education (CTE) changes, noting that Early Childhood Education (ECE) courses can yield dual-enrollment credits at PCC and that a student who completes all three years in the pathway could earn up to 15 credits at PCC. Additional revisions update Spanish course descriptions to emphasize cultural competence, clarify the small-ensemble course so beginning players may enroll, and retitle a fitness course to reflect a broader cardio-respiratory and overall fitness focus.
Unidentified Speaker 5 moved to approve the revisions; Unidentified Speaker 1 seconded. The board approved the item 5–0.
During discussion board members asked for clarification about how GPA averaging and award thresholds would apply across semesters and whether teacher permission and demonstrated skills would limit eligibility for peer classroom mentors; Castro responded with specific process steps for counselor and teacher coordination. The board made no amendments to the proposal before voting.
