At its February session, Akron City Council approved several administrative and procurement items summarized below.
Motorola radios: Council authorized the mayor to contract with Motorola Solutions to replace portable radios for Akron Fire and Police, citing equipment more than 10 years old and improved technology for first responders. The ordinance passed by roll call, 12–1.
DollarWise grant: Council authorized acceptance and expenditure of a $10,000 United States Conference of Mayors DollarWise Innovation Grant to support childcare‑provider stability and early‑learning system scaling; the measure passed 13–0 as part of committee business.
Deicing agents and Home Avenue improvement: Procurement for deicing agents with EnviroTech Services LLC and the Home Avenue street improvement project were placed on the consent agenda and therefore approved as part of the consent vote recorded earlier as 13–0.
Training center and range: Council authorized contracts with the city of Cuyahoga Falls to use its indoor training center and firing range so Akron officers can meet state qualification standards; an objection was raised to suspending the rules because a member said they had not seen the contract, but the ordinance passed 12–1.
Other actions: A conditional‑use application for an addition to a daycare at 1264 Copley Road and a petition to create the Highland Square special improvement district were referred for further consideration.
What’s next: Staff will provide contract details where requested; committee schedules were announced for upcoming meetings on public safety, budget, planning and other topics.
