Wayne council approves youth services funding for Cedar Point transportation and concert uniforms

The Wayne City Council approved two youth-services spending requests in one meeting: $12,000 to subsidize transportation for eighth‑grade Cedar Point trips (Franklin and Adams schools only) and $63,463.42 to purchase concert-performance uniforms for the Wayne Memorial High School band.

A Youth Services representative told council the transportation money would come from the youth services fund and be provided to the schools; the trips are school‑sanctioned and covered under school insurance, so staff said the city assumes no additional liability. The representative said the program is funded through grant dollars and reserves: "we are able to tap into 1,500,000 from our first contact grant, $250,000 per year through a YAP initiative, and $150,000 yearly through a JAG grant," and that they maintain a reserve of roughly $1,200,000 that is intended to be put back into the community.

On uniforms, staff clarified the $63,463.42 would buy concert (not marching) uniforms intended for a rental closet so students who cannot afford full purchase can participate; staff described plans to partner with a local dry cleaner to maintain the uniforms and noted the item is a one‑time capital outlay for long‑term use.

Council asked which schools would benefit; staff confirmed the Cedar Point transportation applies to Franklin and Adams only, and that Stevenson Middle School was not included at this time. Councilmembers praised the youth services program and the Recovery Action Network for community work. Motions to approve both items were moved, supported and carried on voice vote.
