HURRICANE — City staff used the council meeting on Monday to update elected officials about ongoing projects across departments, from development permitting to public safety.
Building official Larry Palmer told the council the city approved 345 single‑family homes in 2025 (up from 289 in 2024) and reported total construction valuation of about $131 million for the year. Public‑works and planning staff described multiple road projects, design work on a second access into Sand Hollow, and upcoming contractor procurement for a police station/city office project using a qualifications‑based process (CMGC).
Recreation staff confirmed pool demolition has begun at Grass Creek, and a gym contractor/architect walkthrough is set for the following morning. The community center roof is scheduled for replacement in April, and concessions for the baseball season have been leased for the coming months.
Police Chief Kurt Yates reported a series of construction burglaries with stolen tools identified and recovered, and said officers identified a suspect with out‑of‑state ties; the department also announced intentional vandalism to eight golf greens at Sand Hollow with estimated damages of $57,000. Animal control staff said the shelter is full amid increasing reports of dog abandonment along Old Highway 91.
Water and power updates included work to put water from Dixie Springs into distribution tanks serving local residents, progress on the Sky Ranch tank and irrigation ponds, and a Highway 91 distribution‑line project beginning within weeks. Power staff said a tree‑trimming contractor will start Monday and the power board is set to finalize a cost‑of‑service study next week.
The council also received a report on pickleball‑court reconstruction (on schedule) and learned that parks staff assisted the sheriff’s office with the exhumation of a 1970 cold‑case victim to allow DNA testing.
