Commission approves museum addition; temporary museum-store structure allowed during construction

The Downtown Design Commission voted Oct. 16 to approve the proposed addition to a downtown museum, application DTCAD-25-00079, after staff recommended approval and the applicant confirmed operational plans for construction.
Planning Department staff member Laura Griggs presented site photographs, summarized the project's history and told commissioners the addition had been discussed at prior meetings. Griggs said the sign component will return separately for review and that staff recommended approval. "We are recommending approval," she told the commission.
Griggs and the applicant noted a temporary structure will be installed on site to serve as the museum store while construction proceeds; the applicant said the temporary structure is planned to remain in place while the museum stays open during construction (approximately 18 months). The structure and its placement were shown on the submitted site plan.
A commissioner complimented the applicant’s prior engagement and said the presentation allowed commissioners to understand and support the design. A motion to approve the application on the basis that it complies with the Downtown Design District zoning ordinance (as referenced in the staff report) was moved and seconded; the motion passed.
The commission noted that the forthcoming sign application will require additional review because of sign size and likely variances. Staff will continue coordination on signage and the applicant will return with that component.
