HTC Sign Advisory Committee approves Marissa Collection sign, defers Washington Street application for revisions

The HTC Sign Advisory Committee on Feb. 3 approved a carved wood hanging sign for the Marissa Collection at 25 Center Street and asked an applicant for a Washington Street seasonal tenancy to return with revised drawings.
Chair Chris Young opened the discussion of the Marissa Collection application after applicant representative Caitlin described the proposal as “a 20 by 15 inch double sided carved and painted sign using the existing bracket,” and said there was no new lighting planned. Commissioners raised only minor questions about window paper signs seen in earlier photos; Caitlin said those had likely been removed and offered to confirm. With no objections, the committee approved the application by voice vote.
The next application, for 25B Washington Street, came from Robert Grandrade on behalf of a seasonal tenant. Grandrade said the applicant planned a “simple white, double sided painted” mahogany sign and explained that the existing bracket’s eye-hooks make a 40-inch width the practical fit. Commissioners noted that a 40-by-24-inch sign would be about 6.66 square feet, exceeding the five-square-foot maximum; Paul Wolf suggested adding a painted frame and softening the typography (a serif font) to improve appearance. Kevin Koester urged cleaning and repainting the existing bracket and recommended a frame so the sign’s white background would not “bleed off” the edges.
Because the proposed dimensions exceeded the local size limit, the committee asked the applicant to submit revised plans trimmed to meet the five-square-foot allowance and to add a border/frame. The applicant agreed to provide revisions and the committee voted to hold the application for a future vote after the redesign.
The committee’s actions were procedural: staff will review the revised submittal before the committee takes a final vote at a later meeting. The committee also reminded applicants to coordinate with staff on bracket cleaning and any necessary repainting before installation.
The committee’s next regular meeting may include the revised Washington Street application when materials have been resubmitted.
