Pierce Transit told the Lakewood Youth Advisory Board it is planning targeted outreach to help students become comfortable using public transit.
Shannon, a staff member who briefed the board, said transit staff proposed several activities: run the same training used at the Boys & Girls Club for the youth council, organize a field trip that stations students at different Lakewood bus stops with a coach on board, and bring a transit coach to the April youth summit for hands-on exploration. "They're really excited about the opportunity to get in front of the youth," Shannon said. Transit staff also offered to sign students up for free ORCA cards and to run a summit-day route or shuttle to pick up attendees.
Board members welcomed the outreach and discussed logistics: ensuring adequate notice to families, coordinating with schools for recruitment, and marketing timing. One member suggested Pierce Transit staff could both table as a vendor and provide a coach at the summit so students could 'crawl all over the bus and ask questions.'
Shannon said she will follow up with Pierce Transit to confirm details and work on parent/student outreach. The board did not take a formal vote on the transit proposals; staff were asked to report back with specific dates and implementation plans.
Next steps: Shannon will coordinate with Pierce Transit on training dates, field-trip design, and ORCA-card sign-up logistics and return to the board with a proposed plan.
