Brevard School Board adopts agenda, approves policies and votes to remove three library titles

The Brevard County School Board on Aug. 27 approved its agenda, adopted several policy revisions and administrative recommendations, and voted on multiple library book challenges following committee recommendations and board debate.
Board members adopted the meeting agenda and approved 15 consent items and administrative staff recommendations by roll call. Dr. Rendell noted additions to the posted agenda, including a recognition and inclusion of agenda item F15 to approve the 2024-25 collective bargaining agreement with the Brevard Federation of Teachers.
During public hearings the board approved revisions to board policy 3120 (employment of staff) and board policy 7217 (weapons) after no public commenters addressed those items. The board also approved the 2024-25 student progression plan.
On book challenges, the board considered three committee recommendations. After debate the board voted to remove People Kill People by Ellen Hopkins (mover argued the text contains explicit material and has had essentially no checkout activity), approved the removal of Damsel by Elena K. Arnold per the committee recommendation, and—after discussion about format, content and potential legal risk—voted to remove Sasaki and Miano vol. 1 by Sho Harasuno following a successful amendment to the motion. Board members and counsel referenced the Escambia litigation in a discussion of legal exposure for districts that remove titles outside established process.
A pulled consent item (F24), relating to a superintendent incentive and contract extension, drew objection from one board member who said individual evaluations were not published and opposed a $10,000 incentive and an early two-year contract extension; the item ultimately passed with that member voting no.
Board business ended with routine reports, including a brief presentation on an upcoming county ad valorem tax abatement question, and adjournment.
What's next: several items may return for further action; the board did not take additional final action on the information item presented during the meeting.
