The Farmers Branch City Council reviewed three potential relocation sites for Liberty Plaza at a study-session portion of its Feb. 3 meeting and asked parks staff to develop conceptual designs and cost estimates, with several members signaling preference for the Valley View/Rose Garden site.
Robert Diaz, parks and recreation director, described option 1 (Rose Garden/Valley View, roughly 1.59 acres, existing parking and visibility), option 2 (front of the historic Datsun House with amenities but limited public hours) and option 3 (Farmers Branch Park, about 1.99 acres adjacent to the 'branch connection' and veterans-programming sites). Diaz said each site has trade-offs on parking, accessibility and existing amenities.
Council members raised concerns about tree removal at some sites and the importance of maintaining pavilion and playground rental spaces where applicable. Several councilmembers favored the Valley View/Rose Garden site because of public visibility, proximity to a cemetery and existing parking; one councilmember said the Rose Garden adjacency gave the site appropriate reverence for veterans and remembrance.
Council directed staff to prepare conceptual drawings and estimates for one or more preferred sites and return with those materials for further review and selection.
Next steps: parks staff will produce conceptual site plans and cost estimates and return to council with those designs for selection and budgeting.
