Buffetown signs up for FirstNet; council to consider incentives for first responders

Town Manager Erin Nelson briefed the council on FirstNet, a nationwide emergency communications system hosted on AT&T's network that provides priority and preemption features for authorized public-safety users.
"I did sign up the town of Bluff," Nelson said, explaining staff completed authorizing-organization steps so local first responders can apply to participate. Nelson said the town's enrollment costs nothing in its current role as an authorizer and that individuals who enroll would pay their own plans initially, though discounted options exist through FirstNet. She noted one vendor quote of roughly $25 per line for a minimum of 10 lines if the town later chose to subsidize plans as an incentive or if those organizations became town-managed.
Council members asked how FirstNet differs from apps and mutual-aid tools (GETS/WPS) and discussed coverage trade-offs between AT&T and other carriers in Bluff. Staff said FirstNet phones receive priority access and that FirstNet can be used in combination with apps such as GETS, and that in major incidents AT&T deployable assets (mobile network boosters) can improve connectivity.
Next steps: staff will distribute enrollment information to local first responders and work with the emergency manager to track uptake; the council may consider funding incentives after assessing participation.
