Smaller details of the structure’s condition were discussed: a consultant said the building’s interior is unsalvageable owing to mold, and county staff identified five exterior decorative pieces the county would like to preserve. Contractors bidding on the work will be told to assume the presence of lead-based paint and to stop and notify staff if they encounter asbestos or other hazardous materials during demolition.
Staff described the project estimate as roughly $1.4 million when including modifications to close a connection to an adjacent building; earlier estimates for straight demolition (without that connection work) had been in the $900,000–$1,000,000 range. The bid opening date in the packet is February 24 (time listed as 4:00 p.m. as a placeholder). Highway staff will share some costs because the county expects highway to build a cold-storage facility on the cleared site after demolition.
