Brazosport ISDs deputy for teaching and learning, Brian Cole, presented the districts fall curriculum-based assessment (CBA) results and outlined actions to support campuses with lower relative performance.
Cole described how CBAs are used to assess portions of the scope and sequence aligned to state standards and explained that results are analyzed to identify high- and low-performing classrooms. He highlighted specific patterns: Polk Elementary stood out in third grade math; Rasco performed strongly in fifth-grade science; Freeport Intermediate showed lower performance in multiple grades; and Brazoswood led in some high school measures. Cole emphasized the use of claim-evidence-reasoning instruction and said targeted coaching, walkthroughs and specialized November training are under way for identified classrooms.
Trustees asked about extending instruction in some grades and when growth-designated screeners (Star Renaissance) will provide clearer growth data; Cole said the screeners will run through mid-January and he will report growth data once finalized. When a trustee asked whether the district had correlated vaccination rates and mastery levels, Cole said there is no established statistical correlation for the CBAs and added that CBAs are designed as indicators that align to current-year scope rather than to the full STAAR exam.
