The Wisconsin Rapids Public Works Committee on Monday approved a request to allow the Wood County Health Department to apply for grant funding to install sidewalk art on the city-owned recreational trail adjacent to the farmers market.
Staff summarized the proposal, saying the project would be ‘‘at no cost to the city, paid for via grant and…any other funds that they would need to raise,’’ and would be contingent on both a successful grant award and subsequent artwork approval. Committee members asked staff to confirm the city’s willingness to allow the application before the county pursued funding.
Committee members raised questions about durability and ongoing maintenance. One member asked about the lifespan of the work and who would be responsible “once it gets to a point where it does fade or…becomes unsightly.” Staff noted a previous painted crosswalk had faded more quickly and said the recreational trail would see less plowing and heavy traffic, so paint should last longer, but acknowledged that paint will eventually fade and suggested the Farmers Market or a community group might coordinate long-term upkeep.
Chair moved and committee member Palmquist seconded the motion to allow the Wood County Health Department to apply for a grant; the committee approved the motion by voice vote, recorded as an affirmative 3-0.
Committee members said the project could be a fitting addition to the downtown riverfront experience if maintenance plans are clarified. Staff and the committee said they will review any final artwork proposals and maintenance commitments if the grant is awarded.
