Coral Springs, Florida
At its Feb. 14 meeting, the Coral Springs City Commission unanimously approved a slate of advisory-board appointments, issued multiple proclamations and heard public comments on community events and traffic safety.
Appointments and votes: The commission appointed Jennifer Levy to the Accessibility Advisory Group and approved reappointments and new appointments across the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and Public Art Committee. Among those approved were Noren Moyle (finance seat), Lorna Burton Brown (general member), Scott Gilman (general member), Jermaine Beebe (urban design seat), Tony Riggi (special populations representative for parks and rec), Joyce Mallas (private citizen), Orianna Smith (public art alternate, unexpired term through 06/07/2028), Anna Reuben Reyes (arts educator, Ramblewood Middle School teacher) and George Cifuentes (architect/landscape architect). The motions carried by voice vote with no recorded dissents.
Proclamations and recognitions: The commission recognized the 2026 Martin Luther King Jr. Committee for scholarship fundraising, read and adopted a proclamation declaring February 2026 Black History Month in Coral Springs, and proclaimed Feb. 14, 2026 National Donor Awareness Day to honor organ donors and recipients. The consent agenda included a proclamation designating February as American Heart Month and encouraged residents to take CPR classes offered by the Coral Springs Regional Institute of Public Safety (cprcsrips.edu/cpr).
Public comment: Sharyar Wahid, speaking for the South Florida Muslim Federation, thanked the commission for allowing the group's fourth annual conference to proceed at the Performing Arts Center despite prior objections from some community members. Addressing the chamber, Wahid said the event was "the biggest and best" the group has held and emphasized inclusion.
A resident, Jose Moreira, urged the commission to address fading or missing road striping and asked what plans exist to restripe streets maintained by the city versus county or state entities to improve traffic safety.
Commission remarks and community events: Commissioners praised staff and volunteers for recent community programming (including the Coral Springs camp out and a performance by Cedric the Entertainer). City Manager Catherine Gibbons and staff highlighted volunteer hours, upcoming State of the City events and federal appropriations work credited to staff member Amanda Wheeler.
What to watch: The commission announced the next regular meeting on Feb. 18 at 6:30 p.m. and encouraged residents to attend the State of the City event.
