Mesquite ISD board approves early June 2026 disbursement of final 'stay pay'

The Mesquite Independent School District board approved a request from administration to make the final 'stay pay' disbursement in the June 2026 paycheck, moving the payment into the 2025–26 fiscal year rather than the prior practice of paying in November of the following fiscal year.
Administration described stay pay as a retention incentive available through 2026 for qualifying employees who meet continuous service thresholds. "Stay pay was a retention incentive to encourage employees to remain with Mesquite ISD," administration said. The district said professional employees received $5,000 and paraprofessionals and auxiliary employees received $2,500; part-time employees, substitutes and retire-rehire employees are not eligible.
A trustee asked how many employees the payout would affect. An unidentified staff member estimated typical payouts are about $2.9 million annually and that, in the final year, approximately 920 employees could be eligible, which "would probably yield around $3,800,000." The staff member said the February budget amendment will present refined, scrubbed data.
Trustee Bingham moved and Trustee Everett seconded approval of the early disbursement; the motion carried on a voice vote announced by the presiding officer. The board did not record individual roll-call votes in the transcript.
Administration said payroll and Human Resources will verify eligibility and provide the formal budget amendment with final numbers to the board in February.
