Mesquite ISD board approves Coach Williams as West Mesquite athletic coordinator and head football coach

The Mesquite Independent School District Board approved the hiring of Coach Williams as the campus athletic coordinator and head football coach at West Mesquite High School. The approval came by voice vote after a motion from Mister Seward and a second from Mister Rose; the president announced, "Ayes have it," and said the "motion carries."

Board members moved quickly to fill the position, then Doctor Rivera confirmed the board had approved "Coach Williams for the athletic coordinator position" and invited Cody Groves to the lectern to introduce the hire. Cody Groves read a biography saying Coach Williams brings "more than a decade of experience as a head coach, athletic coordinator, and educator," and that he most recently served as athletic coordinator and head football coach at Sam Houston High School in San Antonio ISD, where he led the program to "3 consecutive playoff appearances and a district championship." The bio said Williams previously served as defensive coordinator and offensive coordinator in San Antonio ISD-area schools and has worked in Hays ISD, LaGrange ISD and at Dallas Carter High School.

According to the introduction, Williams is a Baylor University graduate, where he also played football, and holds a Texas certification in physical education. Groves told the board that references "raved" about Williams and that district leaders were "really, really excited" to bring him "to the Mesquite ISD family."

Coach Williams spoke to the board and attendees, thanking the board and saying he was "a Dallas kid" who had returned home. He pledged to "uphold the traditions," "put academics first," and told the room, "we will not drop the ball at West Mesquite" and "we will not disappoint you."

After the introduction and brief remarks from Williams, the board president called for a motion to adjourn. The meeting was adjourned.
