Council approves San Juan County sheriff’s use of cultural center for training

Bluff Town Council unanimously approved allowing the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office to use the Cooperative Cultural Center for recurring training exercises, following discussion about liability, scheduling and notifying the public.
The Bluff Town Council voted on Sept. 16 to permit the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office to use the Cooperative Cultural Center for recurring training, including active-shooter and other tactical exercises.
Councilors raised questions about liability coverage and advance public notice for training that could involve loud sounds or activity on empty evenings. "I think they're liability insurance, but that's a push I can ask Mac," a councilor said during the meeting; staff said they would confirm insurance and access procedures.
A motion was made to allow the sheriff's office to use the facility for training and carried unanimously on a voice vote. Staff were directed to coordinate key/code access and to give deputies a contact to obtain keys or codes for scheduled sessions.
The council noted training at the cultural center can improve first responders' familiarity with local facilities while recommending advance public notification so residents are not alarmed by training sounds.
