Jefferson County to advertise even $100,000 public‑safety distribution for county fire departments

Jefferson County leaders agreed on a framework to resume distributions from the county’s public‑safety fund to volunteer and rural fire departments.
Speaker 4 reviewed previous distributions and described a matrix used during the county’s ARPA allocations. Fire department representatives urged a straightforward approach, citing sharply higher costs for vehicles, turnout gear and insurance. Speaker 9, representing county fire chiefs, said even small departments face the same safety needs as larger units and urged equal treatment.
After discussion the bodies agreed to advertise the intent to distribute an initial $100,000 evenly among county fire departments and hold an additional portion for special project requests; staff will advertise the amount and bring a vote at the March council meeting.
“Maybe the matrix isn’t needed as much as just an even division amongst the county fire departments,” Speaker 4 said during the exchange. The board approved a motion to proceed with that plan by voice vote.
