At least one resident, Carol Maher of Downtown Des Moines, urged the board to reconsider allowing an out-of-state production company to film policing activities in Polk County. Maher said such programs "promote a hyper-masculine view of policing" and risk portraying vulnerable residents on their worst days; she asked the board to decline the partnership.
During the separate vote on the Langley Productions agreement one supervisor (Connolly) recorded a 'No' vote while the remaining supervisors voted 'Yes', carrying the contract approval.
The contract approval does not, in itself, authorize filming on specific dates or locations; staff described the action as approval of an agreement for production services, and further operational details would be handled through the sheriff’s office and standard permitting processes.
