Polk County supervisors approved position modifications that include a proposed director of compliance and risk management to be situated under the board of supervisors/executive leadership.
Opponents argued the function belongs in human resources and raised concerns the reorganization chart made the interim county administrator appear to report to the chair rather than to the full board. One supervisor said the county had recently hired an HR director with a law degree who could handle legal and compliance tasks and questioned creating a new, potentially costly position.
County administration defended the reorganization as standard for comparable counties, saying the role is intended to provide countywide risk analysis, statistical and financial modeling, insurance-renegotiation expertise and long-term cost savings. Staff pointed to rising insurance and employee-health costs and said the position would focus on controlling those expenses and improving data-driven decision-making.
After discussion the board approved the position modifications by roll call.
