Walled Lake 99At the city council meeting, residents used public-comment time to describe two community initiatives seeking city coordination and support.
Tony Hoeppack, longtime derby organizer, described the Wall Lake Ice Fishing Derby9now in its 18th year9and said he expects significantly increased registrations this year (he reported 293 registrations at the time of the meeting and pegged possible attendance in the 80091,100 range if trends continue). Hoeppack outlined logistics (parking at lake north end and Riley Park, coordination with police, fire and public works for trash and safety) and asked whether the city could formally recognize the event as "recognized by the city of Walled Lake" while avoiding assumption of liability.
Kelly Sharp and Emily, owners of Purefit Pilates & Yoga, introduced their downtown studio (located in space at Walled Lake United Methodist Church) and requested to run park-based classes this summer in local parks (including Hiram Simms Park, Riley Park and the green across from Mercer Beach). They described the studio's community work (free classes for financially constrained students, partnerships with local nonprofits) and said their outdoor classes draw 309100 attendees in good weather. Councilors directed them to Parks & Rec staff and suggested follow-up at the Parks & Rec meeting.
Staff and council expressed support for both efforts and emphasized the need to coordinate with Parks & Rec, public-safety teams and the DDA for parking and event logistics.
