The Fairfax City Board of Architectural Review on Sept. 3 unanimously approved façade renovations for the Bank of America branch at 9500 Main Street (Case BAR2400017).
Staff presented the application and said the project would remove existing bollards, siding and the drive‑through canopy, repaint the brick in a shade described as “Fairview,” install a new Hardie board system with a beaded smooth texture, replace light fixture housings and bollards, repair and repaint the dumpster enclosure and upgrade landscaping. "Staff believes that the proposal complies with the provisions of the zoning ordinance stated under section 6‑57 approval criteria and is in substantial conformance with the design guidelines for the Architectural Control Overlay District," Anna, the staff presenter, said.
Applicant Sean Harmon of Gensler introduced himself and offered to answer questions; board members raised no substantive design questions. The board approved the request with conditions that the work be in general conformance with the plans and renderings submitted in August 2025 and that the applicant secure all required zoning approvals and permits prior to construction.
Motion language recorded in the meeting directed that approval be conditioned on general conformance with the August 2025 plans and required permits; the motion was made by Mr. Schrader and seconded, and the vote carried unanimously.
The approval is limited to the design elements reviewed by the Board of Architectural Review; the applicant must obtain any additional zoning approvals, building permits and inspections required by city departments before work begins. The public hearing record lists the case number as BAR2400017.
