Staff reports council denied Courthouse Plaza, previews Solid Waste public meeting and grant committee vacancy

At the Nov. 10 Planning Commission meeting staff reported City Council denied a Courthouse Plaza development proposal 4–2, announced a Nov. 20 Solid Waste Management Plan public meeting, and reminded commissioners of a vacancy on the Façade and Interiors Improvement Grant committee.
After the CIP work session, staff provided routine updates to the Planning Commission on recent City Council actions and upcoming public meetings. Staff reported that on Oct. 28 the City Council voted 4–2 to deny Courthouse Plaza’s proposal to develop part of the site with residential units and approximately 12,000 square feet of retail.
Staff reminded commissioners that the Affordable Housing Strategic Plan is wrapping up and that a public meeting on the Solid Waste Management Plan will be held Nov. 20 from 7–8 p.m. at the Katherine Johnson Middle School Library. Staff also noted a vacancy on the Façade and Interiors Improvement Grant committee after Commissioner Coleman stepped down and said the commission will appoint a replacement at a future meeting; staff said the committee meets virtually and only as needed to review applications.
Commissioners used the staff report to raise a mix of procedural and outreach topics including reappointments, upcoming local events (GIS Day at George Mason University on Nov. 20), and coordination opportunities with other boards and commissions. The commission adjourned after brief comments and scheduling notes.
