Covington County authorizes lease negotiations, approves pre‑lease work for Probation & Parole space

The Covington County Commission authorized staff Jan. 15 to move forward on modifications needed to lease west space of the county health department to the Probation & Parole office and gave the chairman and county attorney authority to finalize the lease when appropriate.
Miss Carrie, who presented the request, said the county had an opportunity to lease space and that estimates for required modifications appear in the meeting packet (page 44). “We have opportunity to lease space to the probation and parole office,” she said, and asked that the chairman and county attorney be allowed to enter the lease and approve work identified in the packet when appropriate.
Commissioners debated whether to begin repairs before the lease is formally signed. One commissioner said repairs should not start until a signed lease was returned; another argued moving work forward would preserve momentum. The board approved a motion directing the chairman and county attorney to finish lease terms and proceed as discussed; the motion carried by voice vote.
The proposal included a proposed rental rate (presenter referred to $20 per square foot) and a projected annual rent of roughly $43,000, subject to final lease terms. Commissioners asked staff to include protective language in documents so the county is not left responsible for unagreed work if the lease is not executed.
