Superintendent’s update: summer programs, start dates, bus changes and free meals

Speaker 6 delivered a series of administrative updates at the start of the meeting, summarizing summer activities and operational details for the upcoming school year.
Speaker 6 said several summer programs ran across the district, including high-school summer programming and special-education and ESL summer academies; the Phelps summer acceleration academy also ran in August. "The high school summer program ran from July 8 to August fifth," Speaker 6 said, and the district hosted multiple enrichment and athletic camps.
On the school-year calendar, Speaker 6 announced: "Our first day for grades 1 through 12 ... Wednesday, August 28." Pre-K and kindergarten at the Esten Early Childhood Center will begin Sept. 4, with kindergarten hours and preschool times provided during the announcement. Speaker 6 added that class and teacher schedules for grades 1–12 would be available at noon the next day and that preschool and kindergarten assignments would be mailed to families.
Speaker 6 addressed transportation: bus-stop information would be posted on Thursday, Aug. 22; the district added a bus to the Phelps tier and consolidated several stops to reduce morning and afternoon delays. The speaker cautioned that late bus registrations are not guaranteed and could take up to two weeks to process.
On school meals, Speaker 6 stated that breakfasts and lunches will be free this year and that menus are posted on school websites (Chartwells provides the menu data electronically). The update closed with reminders about back-to-school nights, open houses and outreach for families who need school supplies or translated materials.
The announcement aimed to give families logistical information before the opening days and to direct questions to school offices and the district website.
