Cheatham County budget committee forwards transfers; jail move-in delayed by fire marshal door requirements
Summary
The budget committee recommended several transfers — for register of deeds equipment, jail supplies, sheriff payroll reclassification and consultant/legal fees tied to subdivision regulation modernization and the Veil/Bells Reserve project — to be considered by the full commission; county staff said fire marshal requirements will delay moving into the new jail and courtrooms.

The Cheatham County budget committee on the meeting’s agenda reported several transfers and recommended they be forwarded to the full county commission for action next week.
Committee members outlined a $2,509.77 transfer to replace a register of deeds laptop, $15,000 for jail supplies and equipment, $9,500 to reclassify sheriff’s recruiting and retention grant funds into payroll lines, and $305.50 to the election commission for voter-printout costs. The building and codes line included a $20,000 request to cover consultant and legal fees tied to subdivision-regulation modernization and the Veil/Bells Reserve project.
Separately, county building and project staff reported delays to the new jail and courtroom move-in schedule after the fire marshal required changes to exit plans and door configurations. “The fire marshal is making us move some doors on an exit plan,” Brent, a county building/jail project staff member, said, noting a 6–8 week lead time on the replacement doors and that staff now anticipate moving into the new spaces in April.
The committee also recommended a $64,100 capital outlay for highway replacement equipment funded from an auction of surplus highway equipment; creation of a small sheriff’s reserve (approximately $1,500) for donated funds used for the sheriff’s annual Christmas dinner; and transfers totaling $22,968 and $7,373.85 for maintenance contracts and a personnel payout. Those items were forwarded to the commission for formal consideration.
No final votes on these budget transfers were recorded at the meeting; the items were described as committee recommendations that will appear on the commission agenda next week.
