Preliminary designs for MAPS 4 Youth Center emphasize security, separate teen/youth entrances and a tight budget

Architect Colin Fleck presented the MAPS 4 Youth Center preliminary report for Woodson Park, describing three program zones — administration, discovery (learning labs and study spaces for elementary through high school), and amenities (gymnasium, art/music/dance studios, recording and podcast booths). Fleck said the full program called for 55,000 square feet but the current efficient design is about 48,300 square feet.
Fleck described two drop-off/pickup areas to avoid traffic spillover, separate entrances for teens and youth, and security measures including sightlines from a front desk and partitioned access to youth spaces. "We're trying to keep security at the top of our minds when we were laying this out," he said, and the design includes ballistic-rated glazing for primary entrances.
City staff acknowledged a "significant gap" in the budget during subcommittee review and explained a potential path: advance program money from MAPS accounts in the short term so design and construction can proceed, and repay the advance if the upcoming bond passes. Staff emphasized this would not be taken from operating funds and said the program budget and alternates will continue to be refined before final plans.
The board received the preliminary report by motion. No contract award or construction authorization was given at the meeting.
