Owner says temporary laydown yard at 3 Smith Road will be short term; planning board points to selectboard authority

Mike Sanborn, who identified himself as the owner of 1 Smith Road and 3 Smith Road, told the planning board that 3 Smith Road is currently being used for overflow parking and as a laydown yard for contractor Michael's Power while the utility company works in the area. "They're only going to be there for 2 months... that'll and now they're there," Sanborn said, adding the work has already lasted about two months and may extend a few more months.
Board members noted the planning board does not have authority to allow uses outside an approved site plan and advised Sanborn to notify the select board if he needs relief or if the use continues past a temporary period. Several members requested the owner provide a written end date and suggested the owner send an email to the selectboard explaining the situation and proposed resolution. Sanborn agreed to put the timeframe in writing and to communicate by email to document the expected end date.
The board did not take formal enforcement action but advised the owner to follow up with the selectboard, which could cite the property if it deems the temporary use noncompliant with town regulations.
