The Rules, Confirmations & Public Elections Committee on Feb. 3 adopted a verbal substitute to RS20261784, a resolution recognizing Metropolitan government employees for extraordinary work during January 2026 inclement weather.
Sponsor Council Member Alan Welch offered a substitute to update figures referenced in the resolution; members said the substitute was appropriate because numbers continued to change. Committee members praised frontline and line-level workers who restored power after what one member called the largest outage in Nashville history — “over 200,000 people without power” — while also saying the event revealed systemic failures the city must address. One member said praising workers and investigating failures are not mutually exclusive: “I think it's appropriate for us to thank the folks who have been working … but also recognizing some of the failures that have taken place and … working to address those.”
The committee voted to adopt the substitute and then approved the resolution as amended by voice vote. Members said they expect follow-up work to identify institutional fixes so similar outages cause fewer disruptions in the future.
