The Rules, Confirmations & Public Elections Committee on Feb. 3 voted to defer for two meetings a resolution (RS 20 25 17 12) opposing The Boring Company’s proposed tunnels, saying an upcoming meeting with the company could supply needed context.
Chair opened the item by reading the resolution’s concerns, including “lack of transparency, inadequate community and metropolitan council engagement, and troubling labor and safety practices.” Council Member James moved to defer the item so members could hear from The Boring Company; James said, “to my understanding, there is a meeting, with the Boring Company that’s in the works… and so I think it would be appropriate to defer this again to have the opportunity.” The committee approved a two-meeting deferral by voice vote.
The resolution had been deferred twice previously. Committee members said they preferred to consider information from the scheduled meeting (noted in the record as occurring Feb. 19) before taking further action. The chair said the item will return to committee after members have had the opportunity to review material from the company meeting.
The committee did not take a final vote on the resolution; the deferral means the measure will not advance to the full council until the committee reconvenes and revisits the item.
