Board seeks voter approval to add up to $75,000 to special-education expendable trust

Article 4, read at the district’s Feb. 3 deliberative session, would place up to $75,000 into the Exeter School District’s special-education expendable trust from the June 30 fund balance; no new taxation is proposed.
School board member Tim Reed said the fund is intended as a contingency for unexpected special-education costs — for example, additional out-of-district placements or unanticipated service needs — and that the district’s special-education fund balance currently stands at $557,874. If Article 3 (capital reserve) also passes, Article 4’s transfer would occur only from remaining fund balance.
The moderator called the question and the voice vote placed Article 4 on the March 10 ballot. The board also voted to limit reconsideration of the article at the session.
If voters approve the article on March 10, the appropriation will be transferred from the fund balance after the fiscal year ends and used only for unanticipated special-education expenditures.
