Davis School District board approves early learning plan with growth targets for K and grade 1

The Davis School District board voted to approve the district’s 2021–22 early learning program plan after staff reported the plan received preapproval from the State Board of Education.
Miss Cook, who led the presentation, summarized the plan’s goals: ‘‘Goal number 1 is to increase the percentage of kindergarten students making typical or better growth on Acadience pathways of progress from 60% to 63%. Goal number 2 is to increase the percentage of first grade students reaching at or above benchmark ... by 15%.’’ The plan pairs phonics routines, an early intervention software provided by the state, and targeted professional development for K–3 staff.
Miss Cook said the district will add a K–3 math specialist to support implementation, introduce an Acadience math screener, and target teacher training on math fact fluency and number talks. Board members expressed a mix of support and curiosity about workload; one board member noted the daily English language arts block would be about two hours and called the plan ‘‘aggressive’’ but appropriate to meet the goals.
The board approved the plan by voice vote.
