The Village of Lakemore council voted to adopt Resolution 7549 on Feb. 2, 2026, authorizing the mayor to enter a contract with the Summit County Public Defender's Commission to provide defense services for indigent defendants in Akron Municipal Court for the period Jan. 1–Dec. 31, 2026.
The clerk read the resolution into the record and specified a cost limit: "the cost for such services shall be a sum not to exceed $250 per case for 2026." The motion to dispense with three readings and adopt the resolution was moved by a councilmember and seconded; the council approved the measure by roll call.
Council approval follows the reading's findings that the Summit County Public Defender's Commission "possesses the requisite qualifications needed to provide such services" and that the mayor is authorized to sign the contract. The resolution requires a certified copy accompany the signed contract and declared the measure an emergency so it could take effect immediately.
The contract language as read limits representation fees to the county fee schedule adopted by Summit County. The resolution text also instructs that a copy of the contract be forwarded to the Summit County Public Defender's Commission.
Next steps: the mayor will sign the contract and a certified copy will be sent to the county commission as required by the resolution. No additional public hearing on this contract was scheduled at the meeting.
