Board recognizes award-winning educator Melanie Allen and honors retiring district leaders

Davis School District trustees used part of the meeting to recognize staff achievements and retirements.
Melanie Allen, a valued member of the district’s career and technical education team, was recognized for an international award from the International Council for Exceptional Children and was nominated for a skilled professional award from the Council for Exceptional Children. Tim Peters and Julie Larson described Allen’s work in developing transition tools, coaching cadres and partnerships with Weber State University that helped students with disabilities move into employment and postsecondary opportunities. Nate Marston of the Utah Council for Exceptional Children presented the Hilda B. Jones Special Educator of the Year Award on behalf of the state council.
The board also honored retirees. Julie Larson was recognized for a long career that included principalships and service as special education director; colleagues praised her leadership in individualized instruction and IEP work. Janelle Mongale, retiring as director of assessment, was commended for developing data systems and tools the district uses to monitor progress and link results to Trust Lands plans.
Board and district leaders expressed gratitude for the honorees’ service and posed for photographs following presentations.
