District staff told trustees that the pool, adjacent tennis courts and the hillside between them are structurally linked and that historic cut-and-fill and expansive soils have produced repeated settlement and cracking. Jeffrey Ferrato said earlier repairs have been temporary and engineers now recommend deeper stabilization measures (lime-treated subgrades or post-tension slabs) rather than recurring surface patching.
Trustees discussed three notional approaches ranging from smaller-scale repairs to larger reconstruction and agreed the district should engage architects to develop formal scopes, phasing and cost estimates. Trustees asked staff to include seating implications and access improvements in any design work since the pool/tennis area ties into the proposed path-of-travel/ADA improvements.
Staff noted the balance between cost and long-term durability: full excavation through deep fill is cost-prohibitive, but shallower stabilization systems can limit future movement if the designs incorporate appropriate subgrade treatments. Trustees asked staff to return with options that reflect the district—unding targets and to consider bundling these repairs with other campus work to capture economies of scale.
What happens next: staff will ask PJHM and geotechnical engineers to produce schematic options and refined budgets and will show how pool/tennis repairs could be phased with path-of-travel work and lower athletic complex projects. No funding was approved at the study session.
