Berks County commissioners approve consent items, review election work and hear veterans' public comment

At their meeting, the Berks County Board of Commissioners approved routine consent and contract agenda items, reviewed financial reports, and heard public comment related to veterans' activities.

The board approved motions authorizing contracts and purchases listed on a contract agenda (20 contracts) and motions to execute weekly payments and payroll disbursements. The chair noted purchasing recommendations including an emergency bridge repair contract with Lobar Site Development Corporation (estimated $137,870 annually) and vehicle maintenance and collision services with Tom Messano Ford of Reading (estimated $77,192 annually). The board also approved appointments and promotions across county departments.

Treasurer Mitch Darkcourt reported an opening balance of $225,287,087.63 and an available balance of $221,485,149.59 after clearing items. Controller Joe Ruttero summarized cash disbursements for the weeks ending Nov. 7 and Nov. 14, including combined weekly cash disbursement totals.

Multiple commissioners praised election staff and volunteers following May 5 election operations and discussed ongoing provisional ballot handling and certification steps ahead of upcoming meetings of the elections board. Commissioners also announced community events such as ribbon cuttings and anniversaries.

During public comment, Diane Price, chair of the Berks County Armed Forces Advisory Committee, thanked the county for supporting the 76th Armed Forces Day Parade, announced the next parade date (May 17, 2025) and invited participation. The meeting adjourned with notice of a follow-up elections board meeting at 11:00 a.m.
