Game & Fish reports 229 coyotes removed last year; county uses targeted aerial control

Chris said the county recorded 229 coyotes removed last year and that on a recent aerial flight crews took 34 coyotes. He emphasized that reported counts reflect calls the office receives and are not necessarily the total number of depredations countywide: “I'm not saying there's only 2 calves killed in the county last year. Just saying that's what was called into us.” He described the department's approach of targeting areas with phone complaints and shifting from blanket coverage to focused response as calving season begins.
He told commissioners the agency had no confirmed reports of wolves or mountain lions for the previous year and noted bobcat numbers appeared elevated. Chris offered to make materials available on the county and Game and Fish websites.
Commissioners asked about geographic coverage of aerial efforts and coordination with neighboring counties; Chris said flights covered the Missouri Breaks area, portions near Highway 34 and other reported locations and that the plane would be used again as calls warrant.
The board accepted the report and noted the department's reliance on public reports to prioritize response.
