Nacogdoches police report shows 10,867 stops in 2025; race known before stop in about 7% of cases

Chief Scott Weems presented the Nacogdoches Police Department's 2025 racial profiling report to the City Council on Feb. 3, saying the department recorded "a grand total of 10,867 stops for 2025." He told council that officers identified race before the stop in 804 cases — about 7 percent of the total — and encouraged public understanding of that baseline figure.
Weems said officers searched 1,180 vehicles (roughly 11 percent of stops). Of those searches, about 24 percent were based on consent, roughly 65 percent were based on probable cause, and the department found contraband in about half of searches. "On the drugs, that was 76% of the contraband found," he said. Weems also said 312 stops resulted in arrest, with the arrest population about 51 percent Black, nearly 22 percent Hispanic and about 26 percent white.
Council members praised the 7 percent figure for race known before the stop and encouraged residents to participate in the Citizens Police Academy to see policing processes firsthand. The report was accepted and no formal action was taken beyond receipt.
