Historic Preservation Commission approves three downtown signage requests

The Historic Preservation Commission unanimously approved three applications for storefront signage during its Feb. 2, 2026 regular meeting.
Staff introduced HPC application 26-001 for Noble Tax & Accounting at 117 North 2nd Street and said the proposed window graphics are transparent with only white lettering visible, and do not conflict with the commission's guideline standards. The applicant attended the meeting and answered brief questions from commissioners.
The commission then considered HPC 26-002, a facade sign for a business at 107 West Cleveland Avenue (the former Terry's Pawn). Staff told the commission the proposed sign would occupy the same location as the previous sign, measure roughly 4 by 8 feet (about 32 square feet), and adopt a wood-like appearance; staff said the proposal met guideline expectations.
Finally, the commission reviewed HPC 26-003 for Whimsy Pop at 109 South Division Street (the former Boxcar Bakery). Staff noted plans calling for larger window signs on the storefront and smaller interior signage on a lower window with hours and website information on the door. The applicant explained the retail concept and commissioners briefly discussed appearance and materials.
Each application drew a motion to approve, a second and a roll-call vote. All three measures passed on unanimous votes (6-0 recorded for two items where the tally was announced).
The approvals allow applicants to proceed with the approved sign designs subject to any standard permit or building requirements outside the commission's review.
