Summary
Pam Roberts announced her retirement after nearly two decades; Evan Tyrrell will take over as general manager and said he plans to focus on cost control, route efficiency and addressing canyon-specific service challenges.
Pam Roberts, general manager of the Wasatch Front Waste & Recycling District, told the Emigration Canyon City Council she will retire at the end of the month after roughly 18 years with the district. Roberts said the district has implemented cost-saving measures in response to rising expenses and that she feels the operation is in a stable position as she hands responsibility to her successor.
Roberts thanked council members and residents for collaboration and highlighted recent operational changes. The council and several residents offered public thanks and congratulated her on her service.
Evan Tyrrell, the district’s incoming general manager, introduced himself and summarized relevant experience in municipal solid-waste operations, including leadership roles in Flagstaff, Arizona, and in Moab, Utah. Tyrrell said he had toured Emigration Canyon service areas with Roberts and would prioritize cost control, operational efficiency, and adapting collection schedules and enclosures to canyon roadway and weather conditions. He said the district is evaluating improvements such as locked enclosures and timetable changes to reduce litter caused when can lids blow open in high winds.
Residents at the meeting raised specific operational concerns: Paul Brown, homeowners association president for Emigration Oaks, asked that open hoppers be closed or fitted to reduce wind-blown plastic contamination, and others praised Roberts for reliable service. District staff agreed to schedule cleanup of problem enclosures and to pursue hopper-lid repairs where feasible.
What’s next: Roberts’ retirement will take effect at month’s end and Tyrrell will assume the general manager role. The district and MSD staff will follow up on hopper repairs and post updates about enclosure maintenance and any service adjustments for collection in the canyon.
