Lee County adopts burn ban under Ordinance 18‑09 as drought conditions deepen

Lee County on Jan. 20 adopted a temporary burn ban under Lee County Ordinance 18‑09 after public safety staff reported an unusually strong rain deficit and drought indicators exceeding the county’s threshold.
Benjamin Abes of Lee County Public Safety told the board the drought index stood at 637, above the county’s 600 threshold for instituting a ban. “This burn ban includes campfires, bonfires, trash burning, and other similar open incineration,” Abes said, and noted the ban does not affect state‑regulated burns overseen by the Florida Forest Service.
Board members approved the resolution with no objection. Staff said they expect the ban to be in place for at least three to four months and will notify enforcement partners and the public.
