Council creates temporary commission to coordinate 2026 semiquincentennial and Alpena Bypass 50th anniversary events

City staff proposed and the Alpena City Council adopted Resolution 2026-01 to establish the Alpena Community Semiquincentennial Celebration Commission, a temporary advisory commission intended to coordinate and share information about local events related to the nation’s 250th anniversary (the semiquincentennial) and the 50th anniversary of the Alpena Bypass.

The resolution specifies that the commission will be advisory only, will not have independent authority to obligate the city financially or enter into contracts, and will consist of community members and representatives of local organizations with interests in history, arts, education, recreation, and civic engagement. Staff noted related planned events, including programming by the Besser Museum, the public library’s logo contest (deadline Feb. 20 as stated in the presentation), and collaboration with Thunder Bay Arts Council and the county.

Council discussion covered calendar coordination and public input on branding; staff indicated the public will have an opportunity to vote on logo submissions and that the committee will select finalists. The council moved to adopt Resolution 2026-01; the motion was seconded and passed on voice/roll-call votes (as recorded in the meeting transcript).

The resolution takes effect immediately upon adoption and the commission will exist through the conclusion of the semiquincentennial and related Alpena Bypass anniversary activities in 2026.
