Mayor Denise Menchaca read a proclamation declaring February 2026 as Black History Month in San Gabriel and highlighted a San Gabriel Library program focused on the life and work of artist Alma Thomas, with a family-friendly art activity scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 21, from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m.
“In honor of Black History Month, I…do hereby proclaim February 2026 as Black History Month in the city of San Gabriel,” Mayor Menchaca said as she presented the proclamation and encouraged residents to celebrate the diversity and cultural contributions of African Americans.
During public comment, Chastity Jennings Nunez described an ongoing local Black History Month art exhibition she founded and funded and said she has invited council members to a private reception. “The population of African Americans in San Gabriel is still less than 1%,” Jennings Nunez said, urging council members to spread the word about local events and support businesses and vendors hosting associated activities such as a Jazz Zone performance.
The proclamation text and the library program details are available on the city’s website, and staff noted the Feb. 21 event is open to all ages.
