Committee questions Lightcast demographics and requests updated local data after Northland College closure

During the Jan. 27 meeting, committee members expressed skepticism about some demographic and economic figures in the Lightcast summary presented by NRPC staff and asked for additional local verification before those numbers are relied on in the comprehensive plan.

NRPC reported that "since 2019, the county's population has grown about 4.4% and it's expected to rise another 3.3 by 2029," citing national datasets including the American Community Survey and Lightcast quarter‑level outputs. Several members countered that local developments — most prominently the closure of Northland College and recent federal workforce layoffs — may substantially affect recent population and labor‑force figures.

One committee member said they "questioned how much they've taken into account of the fact that Northland closed," and urged staff to pull the freshest possible county‑level numbers from the Wisconsin Department of Administration and other local sources close to the plan adoption date. NRPC staff responded that the Lightcast product uses recent national inputs and that the county will also receive DOA 20‑year projections and other local datasets for inclusion in the plan.

Members also discussed labor‑force participation trends in the Lightcast report (a nearly 2% decline in a recent quarter) and asked for clearer context on whether declines reflect layoffs, retirements or other demographic changes; NRPC agreed to supply underlying definitions and to consider Bayfield County comparisons to capture regional federal workforce impacts.

Next steps: NRPC will provide the survey results and the most current Lightcast/DOA datasets available before the next meeting and will annotate the demographic chapter to highlight any limitations or known data caveats.
